A Guide to The 1896 Tarot

Curses and Blessings

This deck doesn’t reverse. Every card reads upright, meaning what it shows, plain as the ground it’s set on.

Nobody in this deck has wings. Nobody’s a demon. The curses and the blessings both belong to people, and to the land they work.

Read for yourself, and the discipline is patience. Read for somebody else, and the discipline is restraint — say what the card shows, plain, and let them find their own place in it.

The Major Arcana

0 The Fool (Aleph)

A young man walks a mountain trail with everything he owns on his back — a guitar he's only just learning, a harmonica he plays without looking where he's going, a dog that trusts him more than the ground does. He isn't lost. He just hasn't found out yet what the trail costs. It isn't foolish to begin. It's only foolish to believe beginning is free.

In a reading: a leap taken before you're ready — new ground, a risk with no guarantee, the innocence of not yet knowing what it'll cost.

I The Magician (Beth)

Same man, same dog, further down the trail. What he carried loose on the Fool he's put to work — the guitar's in his hands now, the harmonica's rigged so he can play it without holding it, and there's food on a fire he made himself. Nothing here is borrowed.

In a reading: you already have what the situation needs. Use what's in your hands instead of waiting on help that isn't coming.

II The High Priestess (Gimel)

An old woman sits on a chest she isn't opening. Whatever she knows, she's not saying — not from spite, just because some things aren't given, they're earned by sitting with the not-knowing a while longer.

In a reading: an answer that isn't ready to be given yet. Patience with what's still hidden, rather than forcing it into the open.

III The Empress (Daleth)

A woman gathers what the ground gives up without being asked twice — herbs, roots, whatever the stream's edge has grown this season. Where she walks, something usually comes up out of hard dirt anyway.

In a reading: growth that comes from tending what's already there, not planting something new. Abundance earned by attention.

IV The Emperor (Heh)

An old man on his knees fixing a fence that isn't broken bad, just neglected. His authority here isn't a throne — it's maintenance.

In a reading: structure needs upkeep, not expansion. Hold the line you've already got instead of drawing a new one.

V The Hierophant (Vav)

Tradition, the kind passed hand to hand rather than written down — a hymn everybody in the hollow already knows the words to, a way of doing things nobody remembers deciding on.

In a reading: the pull of convention — doing something the way it's always been done, for better or worse. Know why before you follow it.

VI The Lovers (Zayin)

Two people at the edge of a decision, an older woman standing by with herbs and a gourd, not performing a ceremony so much as bearing witness to one.

In a reading: a choice made in front of witnesses, one that's meant to stick. Commitment, not flirtation.

VII The Chariot (Cheth)

A loaded wagon moving at night, pulled by two animals that don't match and don't need to — dark and light, pulling the same direction anyway.

In a reading: forward motion built from things that don't naturally agree. Progress through will, not harmony.

VIII Strength (Teth)

Not the loud kind of strength — the kind that doesn't need to prove itself by winning a fight it could just as easily walk away from.

In a reading: restraint in the face of something that could still hurt you. The strength to not react.

IX The Hermit (Yod)

An old man carries his own light instead of waiting on someone else's. The dog that walked with him as a young fool and worked beside him as a magician is old now too, resting near his feet instead of leading.

In a reading: withdrawal for the sake of clarity, not despair. Look inward before asking anyone else.

X Wheel of Fortune (Kaph)

A watermill turns on its own current, with a bear, a mountain lion, an owl, and a heron watching from the banks — none of them running the wheel, all of them living by its turning anyway.

In a reading: change that isn't yours to control. Best met by adjusting, not resisting.

XI Justice (Lamed)

A woman sits alone with a sword and a set of scales, no company, no lantern to guide anyone to her. A private accounting.

In a reading: a reckoning made alone, without needing outside agreement. Accept the balance, whichever way it falls.

XII The Hanged Man (Mem)

A man looks down into still water and sees himself upside down — not punished, just seeing his own shape from an angle he wouldn't get any other way.

In a reading: stillness that teaches you something movement wouldn't. Don't rush past this.

XIII Death (Nun)

A field already cut, the scythe hung on the fence, a sheaf of wheat left standing where the harvest finished. No reaper here — just work that's done and can't be undone.

In a reading: an ending already finished, whether or not it's been said out loud yet. Nothing to mourn that isn't already over.

XIV Temperance (Samekh)

Two things poured carefully between vessels, neither one wasted — the slow work of mixing what doesn't naturally want to mix.

In a reading: two things kept in careful balance. Patience over haste.

XV The Devil (Ayin)

A chained dog that could walk off the chain any time it wanted to — it's coiled, not locked. The lantern still burns here same as anywhere else in the deck.

In a reading: a bondage you've stopped noticing you could leave. The chain was never locked.

XVI The Tower (Peh)

Something built too fast, or built on ground that couldn't hold it, comes down. What's left standing after is the only part worth building on again.

In a reading: a collapse that was coming regardless. What survives it is the only foundation worth trusting.

XVII The Star (Tzaddi)

A woman kneels by a stream, pouring water from two jugs at once, a star overhead bigger than any single star has a right to be.

In a reading: hope offered without any promise attached. Give what you can, expect nothing back for it.

XVIII The Moon (Qoph)

Two dogs somewhere in the dark, more heard than seen clear — what gets stirred up when the light's not good enough to trust your own eyes.

In a reading: uncertainty you can't see clearly through yet. Don't trust your eyes tonight — wait for daylight.

XIX The Sun (Resh)

Plain daylight, nothing hidden by it — not triumph exactly, just clarity, the kind that shows you everything whether you wanted it shown or not.

In a reading: plain clarity, nothing hidden. What you see is what's actually there.

XX Judgement (Shin)

A reckoning that doesn't wait for permission — the moment everything already true finally gets said out loud.

In a reading: a truth about to be spoken whether you're ready or not. Reckoning, not condemnation.

XXI The World (Tau)

A woman dances alone on a mountaintop, arms out, a wreath around her — no crowd, no prize, just someone who's arrived somewhere and knows it.

In a reading: arrival, with nobody left to prove it to but yourself. Completion on your own terms.

The Court Cards

Fire that's learned to sit still, though it doesn't come naturally to her.

The Spreads

The Single Stone

1 card

For when you don’t have time to lay anything out, or don’t need to. One card, read plain. Sometimes that’s the whole answer.

The Crossing

3 cards, left to right

  1. The ground behind you
  2. The ground underfoot
  3. The ground ahead

Not past, present, future so much as what you’ve already crossed, what you’re standing on right now, and what’s still to walk.

The Fence Line

4 cards, in a row

  1. What’s holding
  2. What’s given way
  3. What needs mending
  4. What isn’t yours to fix

For something breaking down — a job, a house, a person — and whether it’s worth the work of holding together. Not everything falling down is yours to catch.

The Lantern

5 cards, in a cross

  1. Center: the thing itself, lit plain
  2. Above: what you’re hoping for
  3. Below: what’s actually underneath this
  4. Left: what you’re carrying in from before
  5. Right: what’s waiting past the light

The center card gets read first and last. Everything else is context for it, not a separate story.

The Long Table

7 cards

  1. Where you’re sitting
  2. Who’s beside you
  3. What’s been set down between you
  4. What’s owed
  5. What’s given freely, no debt attached
  6. What the table can’t hold anymore
  7. What gets carried when everyone gets up

Card four and card five aren’t opposites. Most tables have both running at once.

Watch for curses. Watch for blessings.
